Assassin's Creed: Odyssey Launch Trailer Is Bloody And Beautiful

It's nearly time for the launch of Ubisoft's latest Assassin's Creed game, and what better way to get people hyped than with a launch trailer? The upcoming release of the game marks a decidedly different turn for the series because it's the first time that Ubisoft has repeatedly acknowledged that this is not going to be a traditional Assassin's Creed game, but rather more in line with a role-playing title than a typical stealth-oriented hack-and-slash game. Although, you probably would never guess that there's more role-playing this time around compared to previous entries in the series, simply judging by the bloody and beautiful launch trailer.

The two minute trailer starts with Alexios' mother handing him the spear of Leonidas, explaining that it takes more than a bloodline to unite the people of Greece and bring honor to Sparta. After telling Alexios that he will need courage, compassion, and commitment to carry out his quest, we get a series of clips showcasing the game's all new combat system, where Alexios performs one of the many new executions that sees him slicing and dicing on an enemy NPC. We also see a similar moment that mirrors Nintendo's Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, where Alexios leaps off the horse to fire an arrow into the heart of his enemy. The iconic Spartan kick from the movie 300 is there, along with a brief glimpse at Medusa and the Minotaur, two classic creatures from Greek mythology.

The trailer doesn't really showcase anything new that we haven't seen before, except for maybe the bow-and-arrow execution from the horse. I don't think we've seen that particular maneuver executed in any of the previous game trailers.

Ubisoft also refrained from undercutting the stealth and assassin-aspects of the series by avoiding talking about the RPG mechanics in the launch trailer. Instead, it seemed like the trailer wanted to focus more on showing off the game's all new dynamic combat system and the large, spacious, beautifully rendered vistas representing ancient Greece.

Also, Ubisoft seems to have only focused on Alexios this time around as opposed to also showing off Kassandra. Usually we see the two of them in the trailer together or we get two separate trailers featuring the heroes of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, but it looks like the studio settled on showing just Alexios this time around.

Another thing that was rather limited in the trailer was the romance options -- it was hinted at but not really featured much in the trailer. Ubisoft is looking to edge in on where BioWare left off in the romance department after Mass Effect was put on ice. Players will have multiple companions to romance throughout the game for both Alexios and Kassandra.

There's also a lot more to the game than what's briefly hinted at in the launch trailer above. In fact, Ubisoft has a 33 page website guide covering all of the important details of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, which launches on October 5th.
