Birdo Is Coming To Mario Tennis Aces

This past summer Nintendo released Mario Tennis Aces as a sort of hybrid sports-fighting game. It was a breakout sensation for gamers looking for something that wasn't a first-person shooter, a rogue-like, an action-RPG, or a Dark Souls clone. The game has been receiving some steady updates over the last couple of months, and Nintendo doesn't seem to have any plans to stop. The latest update for Mario Tennis Aces will see a familiar face make a return to the series, and make her debut for the first time in this particular outing. It's none other than the pink-skinned, red-bow wearing Birdo, sporting a giant diamond ring and a whole lot of sass.

The trailer was recently posted up, featuring 46 seconds of the character introduction and her gameplay in Mario Tennis Aces. We see that Birdo is classified as an all-round selection, with a racket to match her color scheme. We also see how her normal shots work, along with her trick shots, where she skedaddles across the court to hit the ball. Her special shot is rather humorous, as a bunch of Shy Guys come around, lift her into the air and then toss her up to hit the ball.

You'll be able to get your hands on Birdo right now if you participate in the online tournament between October 1st and October 31st. If you happen to win the tournament, you'll be rewarded with the all-round tennis pro. But don't worry, you will be able to play as Birdo even outside of the tournament by accessing the character after November 1st.

As noted on the Nintendo web portal, you will need to have access to the Nintendo Switch premium online service if you want to participate in the Mario Tennis Aces online tournaments. This means you'll either have to plop down $3.99 for a month, $7.99 for three months, or $19.99 for a year. There's also a family option for those of you who have multiple users playing across several Switch devices who all want to access the online plan.

Birdo joins a host of other playable characters in the game, many of which hail from the long and illustrious Super Mario Bros. franchise, all jam packed into one action-sports outing. The game received a lot of praise for taking the traditional tennis genre and then turning it on its head with a rock, paper, scissors style attack system that allows players to mix and match skill shots with various defensive abilities, all in an attempt to get the one-up on your opponents.

If you want to give Birdo a go you can do so right now by joining the online tournaments. If you don't have the Nintendo Switch premium online service enabled, you can still wait for November 1st and download the Birdo update at that point to access the character.
