Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4's Microtransactions Are Live On PS4

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 players will be getting just about everything a week early on the PlayStation 4, and that includes microtransactions. If you've got some extra cash lying around, they're available now.
If you're blasting through Multiplayer matches or diving into round after round of Blackout, you might appreciate the opportunity to earn some extra cosmetic gear for your soldier in Black Ops 4. If that's the case, you might be interested in the microtransactions Activision and Treyarch have introduced to the game, which are live now across all regions for the PlayStation 4 and rolling out next week for gamers on the Xbox One and PC.
Microtransactions were inevitable, especially seeing as how Treyarch has been setting the stage for their arrival ever since Black Ops 4 launched. They've basically tried to ease the community into the system, beginning with the introduction of two tiers of free content that can be unlocked simply by playing the game.
The easiest comparison to make is to Fortnite. Just like Epic's massive battle royale hit, Black Ops 4 has seasons of tiered content players can work through simply by playing the game. To be clear, these initial tiers are free of charge. Each season is a couple months long, with experience you earn in Multiplayer or Blackout matches ranking you up and unlocking new gear. Treyarch will also offer special unlock tiers for a limited time, as seen during the Halloween season. There were 10 tiers of Halloween-themed goodies players could unlock over the course of about a dozen days and, again, it's all free of charge.
As revealed in a recent blog post, though, this new set of tiers is called Special Orders and can only be accessed by spending real-world currency. There's a bit more control over how you unlock these tiers, as players can freely swap between which Special Order they want to work through and, once the gear is unlocked, it's yours to keep. In other words, if a special event is ongoing, a player can be working on up to three tiers of cosmetic items to unlock, with these Special Orders being the only set of items you have to pay for.
Perusing the comments, it seems like quite a few fans aren't happy with the inclusion of microtransactions. Some folks seem to be tired of these types of transactions in general, while others call out the fact that Treyarch's system and Epic's system in Fortnite isn't exactly comparing apples to apples. Fortnite is a free game with one free tier of cosmetic items and one paid tier per season. Black Ops 4, though, is a full-price game with a season pass that nearly doubles the cost of the game. The argument some players are offering is that, if Treyarch wanted to do these types of for-pay rewards, they should have maybe taken the place of a season pass.
Based on what we're seeing from the upcoming Battlefield V, that seems to be the system DICE will be gunning for. We know the game will have cosmetics and microtransactions, and this tiered seasonal model seems to be pretty successful right now. However, Battlefield is doing away with the season pass this time around, instead offering new maps and modes free of charge to anyone who purchases the core game.
