Announced on Twitter with first details from PC Gamer, Darkest Dungeon 2’s announcement came alongside a brief teaser video called The Howling End. This video shows six returning classes from the first game: Grave Robber, Leper, Man-at-Arms, Plague Doctor, Highwayman, and Hellion.

The teaser, narrated by Darkest Dungeon’s Wayne June, says “In the howling darkness of the end, men will become monsters. But hope will ride with those courageous enough to carry the flame."

In an interview with PC Gamer, Red Hook’s Tyler Sigman and Chris Bourassa said that the first game’s combat system will return, but will be “tuned-up” for the sequel. Red Hook will also employ a very different metagame structure, but no details were given. Darkest Dungeon 2 will release first on Early Access, and while no platforms were officially announced, PC is clearly a safe bet.

"We love our dysfunctional cast of characters, our atmosphere, and our world,” said Sigman and Bourassa. "Horror is a fantastic space to explore interesting and unconventional ideas, and we have a lot more story we want to tell. Mechanically, we also think we have some valuable nuggets and there is more there that we’d like to explore and build on. Above all, we are committed to crafting Darkest Dungeon II to be its own experience; it will have its own creative and thematic identity."

The team working on Darkest Dungeon is currently at 14 people, though the group anticipates this growing to 20 within a year and a half. "Cultural fit is extremely important to us, and we aren’t in a rush to grow,” said Sigman and Bourassa. "We enjoy each other’s company, share drinks and play games together, but above all, we value hard work and passion. Open, ego-less discussion and brainstorming are an important part of our process—our goal as a team is to find the best possible choice, and we enjoy challenging each other and playing devil’s advocate in pursuit of that end."

Darkest Dungeon was initially released on PC and OSX, and later hit PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and iOS.

In our review of Darkest Dungeon in 2016, we called the RPG “Amazing” saying "Darkest Dungeon is a punishing and awesome game of tactics, management, and pushing your luck to the breaking point.” We also nominated Darkest Dungeon for our 2016 Game of the Year.
