Fortnite Is Teaming Up With The NFL
With gaming burgeoning and becoming a much bigger slice of the entertainment market, we've been seeing a lot of crossover between hardcore gaming and real-life sports. It seems that as gaming gets bigger there's this idea to create cross-pollination between the audiences. Well, Epic Games seems to feel the best way to make that next big step is to team up with a major sporting league like the NFL.
The announcement about Fortnite crossing over with the NFL came courtesy of a tweet that Epic sent out via the official Fortnite Twitter account. The tweet contains a 28 second video that starts with a football player with a drum stick and a custom cowbell. The shot zooms out and we see a bunch of different NFL players in their respective jerseys from the NFL, dancing and performing the iconic taunts from the Battle Royale game.
The video rounds out by informing gamers that they'll be able to get their hands on the NFL player skins within Fortnite starting November 9th, 2018 at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. When you log into the game you should have access to the store where the skins are made available.
Epic followed up the goofy announcement with a more formal blog post over on the official website, which contains details on the crossover between the two organizations. We learn that the official NFL kits and outfits will be available for purchase from the Fortnite item shop. The kits will be available for both the male and female player-characters, so no one will be left out of the loop.
The demonstration of the content highlights that popular teams like the New England Patriots, the Oakland Raiders, and the Pittsburgh Steelers will all make the cut. All 32 team outfits will be available, along with the option to choose which number you want on the jersey, ranging from 1 all the way up to 99.
This news comes shortly after Epic just concluded a major event in Fortnite, where a giant purple cube melted into a lake and then took players into an alternate dimension, where upon their return, they were greeted with brand new islands that were made available in the Battle Royale map. And yes, it's as crazy as it sounds.
Epic Games has been intent on adding new content as frequently as possible while the company still maintains lots of forward momentum with the game. So, we're seeing frequent updates that add new levels, weapons, balance tweaks, and, in this case, new skins from the NFL.
While Epic is definitely pursuing the eSports arena for Fortnite, the collaboration between the NFL and Epic doesn't house anything significant for the eSports market at the moment. However, the door is surely open for a potential crossever event in the near future. For now, though, this partnership is strictly themed around skins, which I'm sure NFL fans and Fortnite gamers appreciate.
