Fortnite Will Allow For Account Merging Following PS4 Cross-Play Announcement

Over the summer things got pretty heated in the console wars, but not for the reasons you think. Usually people are arguing over which console is better and which one has the better game line-up. But, in the case of Fortnite, the wars weren't over who had the better console, but rather why one console wouldn't allow players to cross-play with others from another console. Sony, in particular, created quite the news stir when the company kept denying PS4 gamers the opportunity to cross-play with Nintendo Switch and Xbox One owners. Well, now that Sony has reneged on those policies, the company is moving in the other direction, and this has allowed Epic Games to give folks the opportunity to merge accounts for cross-play compatibility.

For players who created an extra account to play Fortnite on multiple console platforms, we’re working on two things:

The tweet went out on September 26th, 2018 on the official Fortnite Twitter account, which revealed that the company is working on two features regarding players who have multiple accounts in order to play Fortnite on the PS4. The first is that the account-merging will allow players to combine purchases that they've made across different accounts into one main account, so all Battle Royale purchases will be accumulated to one place.

The second is being able to unlink a console from a Fortnite account and then link it to another Fortnite account. This should help alleviate the problem that some gamers ran into when attempting to play the game on the PS4, and then attempting to play the game on the Nintendo Switch. In some cases, some people who played on the PS4 who then tried it on the Switch ran into a problem where they were unable to access the account after it had become locked to the console. This created a lot of bad blood between gamers and Sony because it meant that all of their progress was locked to an account on one system, as opposed to being able to take their account and access it from any system.

Epic Games set it up where the Battle Royale title accommodates every player on nearly every major gaming platform. Even more than that, the company wanted it so that players who purchased goods and cosmetics on their account could then carry it over onto other platforms. Sony restricting PS4 gamers from moving over their character profile from one system to another (or more specifically, to and from the PS4) really put a damper on things for PS4 gamers.

With the new updates, and Sony walking back its previous restrictions, this should help make the transition easier for gamers to more readily take advantage of playing across multiple platforms without feeling burdened due to the restrictions of a certain platform holder.

So, now, if you want to play on your PlayStation 4 while you're at home, you can do that. And then unlink your account from the PS4 and link it to the Nintendo Switch when it's time for you to go out and you want to play while on the go.

It's nice to see Epic picking up the ball and further advancing the cross-platform compatibility after Sony's recent announcement about the company's turnaround on the policy of cross-platform play. It also makes you wonder what other games might take advantage of this feature as well.
