New The Quiet Man Trailer Shows A Lot, Remains Secretive

Square Enix's The Quiet Man has been a very tight-lipped project. It was first announced during this past year's E3 event, where Square hosted a rather small, intimate E3 press conference to roll out news and updates for some of its existing lineup of games, as well as to introduce gamers to the brand new IP. The trailers for The Quiet Man have been rather mysterious and intriguing, mostly due to how the game refrains from exposing too many details about the overall story. A large part of the appeal of The Quiet Man is in the mystery of its character and plot, which have been kept under wraps for the most part with only limited amounts of information being made available about the game. With the latest trailer, we get to see a lot more of the gameplay, even though the project as a whole remains secretive.

The new four-minute trailer for The Quiet Man is titled "Beyond Sound. Beyond Words." The trailer starts with the Quiet Man walking into an alley where some gang members are sitting around and they tell him he has the wrong address; however, he points to his ear and wags his finger to indicate that he can't hear. We then get a collection of clips featuring a singer at the Club Moonrise and the Quiet Man. She plays a song. The gang members from the alley then invade the club and the Quiet Man gets involved by beating some of them up, but a guy in a mask manages to kidnap the singer. The last half of the trailer is a compilation of fight sequences featuring the main character beating up gang members and tracking down the singer by interrogating various people of interest.

There are some interesting moments where the game intermixes live-action cinematics with the actual in-game play. The characters are all modeled after the real life actors, and the lighting and visuals for the game are designed to mimic the live-action elements as well in an attempt to maintain a smooth transition between the two. Even though there's a lot of mouth movement and talking from the characters, we don't actually hear what they're saying.

It does make me wonder if The Quiet Man will be 30fps or 60fps, given that from a gameplay perspective 60fps works a lot better for fighting games, as evident with all the popular fighting games on the market such as Tekken 7 or Street Fighter V. Yet, there's a lot more to the trailer than just that.

It appears as if the game is a crime-drama beat-'em-up. Players will have some measure of linear exploration with a lot of martial arts fighting tossed in between and some wicked looking finishing moves to pull off. There's even a scene that looks like it comes out of Donnie Yen's SPL: Killzone.

We still don't know the full extent of the gameplay, but Square Enix did reveal that the game would be arriving on November 1st next month for the PlayStation 4 and for Steam on PC. It will be a digital-only title so you won't be able to pick it up from retail shops.

You can add The Quiet Man to your wishlist right now by visiting the official Square Enix page.
