The latest Red Dead Online update boasts a slew of new content, including:
New Co-op missions in the "A Land of Opportunities" storyline New Free Roam Missions from new NPC Questgivers: Thomas the Skiff Captain in Bayou Nwa and/or the Aberdeen Pig Farmers northwest of Bluewater Marsh. Dynamic Events around the world New Posse Versus Modes, including Competitive Fishing, Bird Shooting Contests or Herb Picking Contests New Play Styles: Offensive and Defensive Poker is now available at inns and saloons across the map. New Showdown Mode: Overrun New Weapon: the LeMat Revolver New Clothing Items Updated & balanced Hostility system Ability to Press Charges when killed by a player in Free Roam New variant FPS control scheme Updates to Daily Challenge streaks and rewardsThe most noteworthy additions, in our opinion, are the Playstyles and Dynamic Events. Designed to reduce griefing for players who want to explore and interact with the world as opposed to battling other players, the Defensive playstyle adds a series of buffs against would-be aggressors - this includes unique icons, taking reduced damage from hostile players, and the inability to be meleed, tackled or lassoed. “Offensive” players will experience Red Dead Online with all of its default settings and gameplay elements.
Dynamic Events will add randomized interactions with NPCs in need throughout the world, much like the Random Encounters in single player. You can find a full breakdown of everything contained in the update in our Red Dead Online wiki.
“
A massive thank you to everyone who participated during the beta period."
All of this comes alongside the subtle non-announcement that RDR2’s multiplayer mode is now out of its beta phase. Keen-eyed observers may have noticed the “Beta” tag missing from the game’s menus and on its marketing imagery (this is noted in the patch notes for the update as well, the entirety of which you can read here), and the Rockstar Newswire post announcing the update decidedly refers to the “beta period” in the past tense during a thank you to players.
“A massive thank you to everyone who participated during the beta period. Your feedback has been instrumental in helping us fine tune the game so far with many of your suggestions implemented in today’s update, and we will continue to implement more of your feedback in future updates to come.”
The announcement also details some of the additional gameplay elements that will be coming later this year. “This is just the beginning,” it says. “The future of Red Dead Online not only includes continued improvements to the core elements of the world to make every aspect of the game fun for all kinds of players, but also brand-new experiences that establish a deeper, more immersive connection to the world and your character.”
This includes the addition of what Rockstar is calling “Roles,” specific paths and that characters can pursue based on unique and specific skill sets. Three are confirmed to be launching this summer, the Bounty Hunter, Trader, and Collector, and each will offer its own unique weapons, outfits and attributes.

JR is IGN’s Senior Features Editor, and is both glad and sad that he can’t just lasso everybody anymore. He’ll probably still try, and talk about it on Twitter.
