Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's World Of Light Campaign Straight Up Murders Everybody

We've been reporting on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate since its unveiling for the Nintendo Switch, but the news hasn't always been positive... or rather, the news about the fate of some of the characters hasn't always been positive. That trend seems to continue with the new World of Light campaign trailer that Nintendo has started for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The new video was posted on the official Super Smash Bros. YouTube channel. It's a four minute long video that starts with Fox McCloud heroically saying not to let a single one get away. In the sky there are a bunch of hands floating in the air coming towards the heroes. The hands, however, form into a glowing object in the sky that opens a portal and then it proceeds to wipe out everybody. Some of them attempt to use their abilities to fly away and dodge the light beams, a few of them attempt to hide, like Solid Snake who cowers in a box. However, no one is safe and nearly all of them get zapped by the beams... except for Kirby.

It turns out that Kirby, riding on his star, is the only one fast enough to out-maneuver the beams. After the beams engulf the galaxy, it's up to Kirby to fight back and rescue all of the heroes, including Mario, Samus, Falco, the crew from Fire Emblem, and even Bayonetta.

The desperate and somber tone of the beginning of the cinematic is similar to a few other trailers that Nintendo released for the game, where various characters seemed to bite the dust, like King Dedede, Mario, and even Luigi, which caused a lot of gamers to wonder if he was okay?

But, what's really cool here is that this isn't just some pointless cinematic. The whole thing ties into the story mode for the game, called World of Light. The mode starts with Kirby and he'll have to fight against corrupted versions of the other characters, unlocking them as playable heroes along the way. He'll have to turn them back into their normal selves while venturing across a giant world map that covers several zones. It's a really cool looking mode for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and it appears to be how you unlock all the characters in the game.

It's a very similar setup to the way Nintendo had players unlocking content in Mario Tennis Aces, where you also traveled around on a world map, battled foes and unlocked new rackets, outfits, and characters.

It's kind of disappointing that the trailer disabled the comments, because I'm sure fans of some of the characters definitely would have had a thing or two to say about Sonic not being able to outrun the beams, or certain Pokemon not being able to teleport out of the way.

Even still, out of all the characters in the game, it definitely makes sense that Kirby would be the only way to survive given that he is a galaxy-eater class hero, and in many fandom battles he outclasses even some of the strongest characters from properties like Dragon Ball Z. But that's another discussion for another time.

The main thing is that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will have a really expansive story mode, in the form of the World of Light, that seems like it will be a ton of fun to play. Anyone even remotely worried about replayability should just tuck that aside because you'll definitely be spending a lot of time unlocking new characters once the game launches on the Nintendo Switch, starting December 7th.
