Tekken X Street Fighter Is 'Harder to Justify' After Tekken 7's Success

Tekken X Street Fighter is “harder to justify releasing” while Tekken 7 is enjoying success as a service game, says series lead Katsuhiro Harada.

Talking to VGC, Harada, who first announced Tekken X Street Fighter back in 2010, said that “Tekken 7 is very successful as a service game with its DLC. That makes it much harder to justify releasing another game, while Tekken 7 is still doing so well.”

“I was excited about [Tekken X Street Fighter] and I have passion for it, but my logical and business thinking has me wondering if I really should do it,” Harada said. With Bandai Namco having just released a ninth DLC pack for Tekken 7, it’s easy to see this conflict in thinking.

Tekken X Street Fighter is the second half of a collaboration between Bandai Namco and Capcom, in which the 3D Tekken fighting system is used to play duels between Tekken and Street Fighter characters. In 2012 Capcom released its side of the collaboration, Street Fighter X Tekken, which is a 2D fighter featuring characters from both developers’ games.

In 2016 Harada claimed that Tekken X Street Fighter was on hold. At the time, the game was around 30% complete.

With these kind of comments, it seems unlikely that Tekken X Street Fighter will arrive any time soon, if at all. If it never sees the light of day, at least the collaboration will have given us Street Fighter X Tekken, which we gave a 9.0 in our review.
