While last night’s 2018 NBA Awards ceremony announced Houston Rocket’s James Harden as the league’s MVP, the Philadelphia 76ers’ center Joel Embiid received another honor.
Embiid, the third-overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft, was revealed to be the cover athlete of EA Sports’ NBA Live 19.
Embiid, 24, is a 7-foot center from Cameroon who was named to his first NBA All-Star team and led the 76ers to the playoffs this past year. He was nominated for Defensive Player of the Year at last night's award ceremony but lost to Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz.
He's the first 76er to grace the cover of an NBA Live title, though one of the most famous players in the team’s history, Allen Iverson, was the cover athlete of the first five NBA 2K titles from 1999-2003. The previously mentioned James Harden was the featured athlete on the cover of NBA Live 18 and the mobile version of NBA Live, which launched in 2016 instead of a proper console version.
Embiid will also be one of the featured NBA superstars you can choose to play with in The One, NBA Live 19’s career mode. The One debuted in NBA Live 18, and while the game received a 6.5 from us, we said "The best (mode), by far, is The One, a career mode with role-playing elements that puts its focus on your created player and offers a combination of 'street' and 'league' games."
At EA Play, during E3 2018, EA announced that NBA Live 19 will be released on September 7 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and a free demo would be arriving on August 24.
