Street Fighter 5 is Getting a Loot Box Equivalent
Street Fighter 5 is getting the equivalent of loot boxes as part of this week's big update.
Street Fighter 5 is getting an update this week which makes improvements to Survival Mode and adds new obtainable skins. However, the update also introduces a system called Fighting Chance.
Fighting Chance sees playable character Menat opening her own Fortune Teller establishment. If you spend 500 Fight Money (the in-game currency), you will get a 'Fantasy Fortune Reading', which contains multiple, random items - some of which are exclusive to Fighting Chance.
Items include Battle Goods which give you an advantage in Survival Mode, new costume colours only obtainable in Fantasy Fortune Readings, classic pieces of Street Fighter art from across the series, and rare costumes only available through Fantasy Fortune Readings (such as Cammy's Cannon Spike costume seen below.)
Though you cannot purchase Fight Money with real-world cash, and the items obtained through Fighting Chance do not affect multiplayer gameplay, players have expressed their frustration at the addition, criticising Capcom for adding loot boxes despite the controversy surrounding them. Players have also pointed out locking exclusive costumes behind the system makes the grind time it takes to earn Fight Money more galling.
The announcement's timing isn't ideal as The Netherlands will being enforcing its ban on loot boxes as of today, by handing out fines and eventually moving to prosecution.
Street Fighter 5's update will roll out on June 25.
