Why You Should Play Red Dead Redemption 2 On The Xbox One X
1 hour ago
While the Xbox One X is a bit more expensive than a base console, that extra horsepower running under the hood means that games like Red Dead Redemption 2 look better than anywhere else. According to a recent report, Rockstar Games' latest outing looks pretty great on all Xbox and PlayStation platforms, but there's definitely an uptick on Microsoft's One X.
According to a recent test from Eurogamer, Red Dead Redemption 2 has been put through its paces on all current generation platforms, with the best performance coming out of the Xbox One X. While fans on both sides can argue until they're blue in the face over which console they think handles the game the best, studies like those being conducted by Digital Foundry forego brand allegiances in favor of cold, hard facts. And according to the latest numbers, there's no question which console will give you the best visual experience while taming the Wild West.
To be clear, the report goes out of its way to say that the standard PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro, as well as the standard Xbox One S all run the game very, very well, which is something of a technological marvel. It's noted that, with the original game in the series, folks playing on the Xbox 360 enjoyed more foliage, visual effects and things like that. This time around, there doesn't seem to be any such disparity between versions of the game, with details, draw distance and drop-in looking pretty constant across the board.
However, the fact that the Xbox One X runs at native 4K means that you're going to get the best performance out of the game, complete with the smoothest, most vibrant visuals. If you're looking for a tier, it sounds like the Xbox One S is at the bottom, topped by the standard PlayStation 4. Differences between the two sound pretty negligible, but the report notes that the base Xbox console seems to be lacking some pop in the areas of shadowing and things like that. The PlayStation 4 Pro is next on the list, topped by the Xbox One X.
The breakdown of console differences is very thorough but, again, one of the big takeaways here is that the core experience seems to be nearly identical across all platforms, which likely means Rockstar is squeezing every last drop of processing power out of the standard consoles. However, if you're looking for better shadow quality and more intensity in things like depth of field, then the Xbox One X is the console to beat. Also worth noting is that the One X is reportedly damn-near locked at 30fps. Where other consoles drop frames (especially the base models), the One X keeps things nice and smooth and only experiences "minor dips" in the most detailed and busy areas of the game.
